A Boeing 767 covering the Port-au-Prince to Miami route made an emergency landing at Las Americas International Airport yesterday after suffering failure in its hydraulic system. The pilot alerted the airport the plane would land at a fast speed due to the problems. The emergency contingency plan was activated with ambulances, fire engines and security vehicles on the runway. The airport was closed to other flights that had to circumnavigate waiting for the emergency landing to be completed. The plane was diverted to Santo Domingo in the understanding there was better ability to handle an emergency than in Haiti, as reported in the Listin Diario.
The airplane landed successfully, suffering little damages as reported. The 188 passengers, most of Haitian or US nationality, were transported that same day to Miami. AA chose to transport the passengers on the aircraft programmed for the Las Americas Miami flight.
