There are 806 women in jail, compared to 25,142 men. 52% or 582 women, of those in jail are on drug charges, and of those most are 18 to 35 years old, according to a report in El Caribe. Of the men in jail 34% (7,124) are in jail for violation of Drug Law 50-88. Most were arrested for being mules, or attempting to clandestinely transport drugs on their bodies abroad.
In Najayo Jail, of 148 women in jail for drugs, 38 are foreigners, most from Holland. El Caribe reports others are from the US, Panama, Peru, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Haiti. El Caribe reports that the mules are usually convinced to transport the drugs by close friends.
