This morning's print edition of Hoy newspaper shares a front-page photograph with its readers showing President Leonel Fernandez with Libya's Muammar Gaddafi on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the so-called Libyan Revolution. President Fernandez visited Tripoli in August 2009 to attend the African Union Summit and the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of Gaddafi's rule. At the time, the Presidency reported that Gaddafi had offered to help with the installation of a petroleum refinery in Manzanillo, Montecristi province. The Ministry of Foreign Relations also announced that Libya and DR had agreed to establish diplomatic ties. Libya is now experiencing a wave of civil unrest as its population emulates the Egyptians who successfully ousted their long-time ruler. According to press reports today, the Gaddafi regime's security forces have killed an estimated 300 Libyans during the current unrest.
