Old bridge to Haiti closed down

The Dominican authorities closed down the old bridge to Haiti over the Masacre River in Dajabon yesterday and inaugurated a new set of Customs and Immigration offices and a new, larger bridge to Ouanaminthe (Juana Mendez) on the Haitian side. The new structure was almost completely funded by the European Union. However, the Haitian officials have not yet moved into their new buildings because they say that they have not received authorization from the government in Port-au-Prince. The Dominican authorities say that the new facilities will allow for improved controls on cross-border flows and reduce many of the issues that the daily comings and goings represent for the border town.
