The marked increase in the price of oil imports has not managed to slow down gas-guzzling in the DR. Diario Libre reports that the price of fuel went from US$53.81 a barrel in November 2009 to US$69.16 for the same period in 2010, up almost 23%. Paradoxically, while crude prices increased, the country's consumption also went up. The yearlong imports grew by 11.1%, going from 42.88 million barrels in November 2009, to 47.74 million barrels for the same period in 2010.
In 2010, according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the country consumed 1,284 billion gallons of fuel. For the year, the LPG consumption rate was 397.8 million gallons used for cooking and powering vehicles. Dominicans also consumed 90 million gallons of premium gasoline and 209.3 million gallons of regular. The people consumed 220.6 million gallons of regular diesel and 38.1 million gallons of premium diesel. For this week, prices of all fuels went up between RD$0.31 and RD$4.11 a gallon with the exception of LPG, in spite of a sizable reduction in the price of oil on the international markets.
A gallon of premium gasoline went from RD$185.70 to RD$187.50 (19.4% above last year's price). Regular went from RD$175.30 to RD$177.50 (19.7% above a year ago). Regular diesel went up from RD$160.50 to RD$163.20 (28.8% higher), while premium diesel reached RD$169.00 (28.3% higher). Fuel oil went from RD$115.31 to RD$119.41 (25% higher). Aviation fuel avtur, already the most costly in the Caribbean, went from RD$139.57 to RD$141.02, for an increase of 40% and LPG stayed at RD$93.80 a gallon, which is already 17.3% above last year.
Quoted in Hoy newspaper, Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia said that the price of avtur fuel was a threat to Dominican tourism. He said that aircraft went to other places to refuel because of the high price of the fuel in the DR, adding that he would be discussing this concern with the Minister of Industry and Commerce.
