They are known for being the best in the country, and have unexpectedly gotten a break for their multiplying. But recently, demand for the lobsters plummeted, affecting the livelihoods of many fishermen in the south western province of Pedernales after it was reported that the lobsters had the bacteria that infected hundreds of Venezuelans attending a plush wedding in La Romana with cholera. The lobsters had not been properly cooked. Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez said he never banned the sale of Pedernales seafood. He added that he has advised Pedernales fishermen against sourcing seafood from Haiti or caught by Haitian fishermen who trap them off Beata Island.
