El Dia newspaper is featuring a series of articles on the difficulties faced by elderly people who do not have the support of family members or their own income. The newspaper reports that 60% of these seniors are illiterate and that the Ministry of Education has plans to start a program to teach the seniors to read.
An estimated 844,996 people over the age of 65 live in the DR, out of a total population of approximately 10 million. Many have been abandoned by their offspring and depend on the kindness of their neighbors. In the DR there are 32 homes for the elderly, and a further 34 day centers.
