The Haitian authorities halted all traffic over the new bridge to the Dominican border town of Dajabon yesterday, in an apparent protest at the closure of the old bridge and Customs area. The European Union provided funds for the new bridge, and for new office space on both sides of the border. El Nuevo Diario says that Haitian police officers and immigration inspectors refused to allow anyone to cross from Haiti to Dajabon. Most of the people affected were students and traders with documents. A joint declaration from the departments of Migration, Customs, Animal and Plant Health, and the Ouanaminthe city council said that the Dominican authorities should have informed the Haitians of the move, which prohibits transit on the old bridge. The old bridge and customs area date back to the times of the US military occupation of both countries. Customs director in Dajabon, Elvio Bejaran told reporters that the Dominican authorities had informed their Haitian counterparts of the move well in advance.
