With 76.48% of the votes counted, Mateo Aquino Febrillet seems to have ensured he will be the next rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), the state university. As the newspapers went to press, the UASD Election council reported that of 1,909 votes counted, Aquino Febrillet had obtained a total of 1,027, or 53.8%. Meanwhile, his opponent Ivan Grullon had achieved 846 votes for a total of 44.32%.
A total of 2,472 university staff members were eligible to vote in this second round. In the first round, held on 15 February, Aquino Febrillet obtained 42% of the votes and Grullon got 39% of the votes, coming in second place. Neither candidate achieved the required 50% plus one votes needed to win in the first round of the elections. According to the latest official report, the votes at the Science Faculty still needed to be counted.
At 11pm they had not sent their tally-sheets to the UASD election authorities. The election HQ was based in the Pedro Mir Library. Hours before the Electoral Council provided any official information on the election results, Aquino Febrillet declared himself the winner and began to celebrate his victory at the headquarters of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD), where the current UASD rector Franklin Garcia made an appearance.
Aquino Febrillet represents the PRD line, while Ivan Grullon represented the ruling PLD. The candidates themselves voted a little after 10am at the Faculties of Economic Sciences and Humanities. Both Grullon as well as Febrillet recognized that the elections were a tough fight and both men welcomed the fact that they passed without incident.
