A total of 13 maritime ports are in operation in the DR, located across the country's 350kms of coastline along the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. Haina Oriental, to the west of Santo Domingo, is the port that handles the largest volumes of cargo. The Multimodal Caucedo Port to the east of Santo Domingo is second in terms of traffic. Other ports are located in Azua, Cabo Rojo (Pedernales), Puerto Plata, Arroyo Barril (Samana), Barahona, La Romana, Palenque (San Cristobal), San Pedro de Macoris, Boca Chica and Santo Domingo (Santo Domingo), and Manzanillo (Montecristi). Vice Admiral Juan Ramon Soto de la Rosa says that major progress has been made on security issues, mainly in dealing with stowaways. The problem has been reduced 95%. Data from the World Trade Organization indicates that 90% of cargo is moved by sea. The best cargo consolidation center is located at the Caucedo Multimodal Port. Haina and Caucedo manage 96% of container cargo of the country. Haina handles 70% of loose cargo in the country.

Caucedo has the capacity to operate Post-Panama ships. The terminal has a capacity for 19,000 containers of 20 feet. Haina Port has 12 docks, with maximum depth of 11 meters. The port of Santo Domingo, located on the Ozama River, has 12 docks and a maximum depth of 8.5 meters. Puerto Plata, located in the north has six docks and maximum depth of 10 meters.

Heinsen said that on a regional level, the DR was recognized by UNCTAD as having the best sea connection among the DR-CAFTA nations.
