The Senate has already authorized the government to use pension funds for the construction of low and middle-income housing. Yesterday, a special Chamber of Deputies commission discussed the bill aimed at authorizing the government to use RD$120 billion of the pension funds for the housing developments with government officials. Hugo Tolentino Dipp represented the deputies at the meeting, which was also attended by Central Bank governor Hector Valdez Albizu, Customs director general Rafael Camilo, Pensions Superintendent Joaquin Geronimo, Values Superintendent Guarocuya Felix, and deputy director of the Tax Department Roberto Rodriguez, among others.

Central Bank Hector governor Valdez Albizu supports the use of the funds, saying they will help reduce the housing deficit estimated at one million units while creating jobs and stimulating the economy. He estimates that 400,000 jobs would be created.

The bill is known as Proyecto de Ley para el Desarrollo del Mercado Hipotecario y Fideicomiso en Republica Dominicana.
