Santiago Mayor and PLD dissident Gilberto Serulle has announced he is backing the aspirations of Miguel Vargas to be chosen as the PRD candidate in the 2012 election, as reported in El Caribe. The PRD primary is set for 6 March. Serulle is a former PLD party member who switched to the PRD when the party decided to back the re-election of Guillermo Sued for mayor of Santiago in the 2010 municipal election. "We have warned that anyone who is not invited cannot participate in this party and you know what happens to who is not invited, simply he is taken out of the dance," said Vargas, warning against PLD party activists who might send their followers to vote for his rival, former President Hipolito Mejia in the PRD primary.
Vargas asked the Mayor to take an 11-day leave of absence to campaign with him in Santiago.
Serulle says he is backing Vargas to return the favor of his support when the PLD chose to support Sued. In the north area, the recent Gallup poll showed that PRD voters favor former President Hipolito Mejia 58% to 35.5% Vargas.
Vargas pledged to increase funding for public works in Santiago if he is elected President.
