In his state of the nation address on 27 February President Leonel Fernandez defended what his government has done to fight corruption in government.
"My answer to this is very simple: the Prosecutor General should act. He should do so with full independence and freedom. Everyone should be responsible for their actions," said Fernandez, justifying the way his government has dealt with corruption.
Polls show that Dominicans feel corruption has climbed to record levels and the government is doing little to combat it.
Fernandez acknowledged in his speech: "The great challenge that the government and society are confronting is the problem of corruption, of the lack of ethics, of integrity, values and moral principles in general," said Fernandez. He defended the stance his government has taken to fight corruption in office. He again mentioned the Budget Law, the Controller General and Internal Controls Law, the Law for Public Credit, the Procurement Law, the Department for Governmental Procurement and the Law of the Integrated System of Finances of the government. "With these legal dispositions we have created a legal framework to establish criteria of transparency and mechanisms to prevent corruption," he said. He added that the government's National Commission of Ethics and Fight against Corruption has examined and reflected on the best international practices to fight the lack of transparency in government.
