The general reaction to the speech by President Leonel Fernandez was that it was more of the same. Hoy newspaper prints several opinions:
Economist Isidoro Santana of civic group Participacion Ciudadana: "His speech was the same as in past years. He tries to justify that all is well."
Bernardo Fuentes, also an economist, said that while the President says that the government debt is sustainable, at the same time the International Monetary Fund agreement requires a reduction in the public deficit and borrowing. He says international reserves are falling due to the excessive indebtedness.
Lara Guerrero of the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) pressed the point the DR is 138th in the World Economic Forum ranking of wasteful spending by governments. She said that President Fernandez's talk is totally divorced from government actions.
Wadi Cano, president of the Herrera Industrialists Association, said that growth has not translated into better quality of life for Dominicans. He said the time is to act and not create more laws. "It is time to dedicate efforts not to create laws, but to meet those that already exist."
As reported in El Caribe, PRSC Deputy Victor Bisono said: "He said the same as always. On the topic of drugs, for example, the fact that a drug trafficker's girlfriend is in jail does not mean the drug trafficking problem is under control."
Javier Cabreja of Participacion Ciudadana stated: "The President did not cover the issues people had hoped for. We hoped he would dispel the doubts about presidential re-election. It was a speech by someone who aspires to stay in government."
As reported in El Caribe, there were some favorable opinions, including that of Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado: "It was an invitation to hope and confidence. We hope we all become aware that commitment is for everyone and that the national development strategy needs to be taken on by everyone.
