Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, who at the moment has the most campaign billboards and posters on display, announced on Friday he would take a leave of absence from his position as director of the Government Social Programs (Solidaridad, BonoLuz, BonoGas, etc.) to devote his time to his bid to become the ruling PLD's next presidential candidate. He made the announcement from the Presidential Palace press office on Friday.

When asked if other aspiring candidates who hold jobs in government should do the same, he said he could only speak for himself. Minister of Interior and Police Franklyn Almeyda and Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia have also expressed an interest in being the PLD candidate.

The Vice President is the only politician seeking the PLD candidacy to openly use a photograph of President Leonel Fernandez in his campaign materials. According to speculation, he is President Leonel Fernandez's preferred candidate. A recent Gallup poll showed Alburquerque had 6.6% voter preference compared to leading candidacy hopeful Danilo Medina with 62%.
