Cesar Martinez of San Juan de la Maguana surprised everyone by eliminating Olympic taekwondo silver medalist Gabriel Mercedes in the Pan American Games trials held over the weekend. The Pan Am Games will take place in 13-30 October 2011 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Newcomer Cesar Martinez defeated Mercedes twice. Mercedes is also the Pan American gold medalist and by being eliminated, he will not be able to compete to keep his top ranking in the next Pan Am Games. The 23-year old is a tenth semester medicine student at the UASD. He said he began practicing taekwondo in his hometown of San Juan when he was 15. Martinez is two inches taller than Mercedes. The eliminatory trials took place at the Olympic Center Juan Pablo Duarte. Mercedes was the silver medalist in Beijing 2008, as well as the Pan American taekwondo champion and Central American and Caribbean champion in the 58-kilo category.
