Haiti presidential candidate Michel Martelly met with President Leonel Fernandez at the Presidential Palace yesterday. In a recent poll, he had 60% of voter preference and is the favorite to win the election.

As reported in El Dia, Martelly attributed the increase in Haitian migration to the DR to the economic and institutional weaknesses in Haiti. He said that this would be eased by improving living and working conditions in Haiti.

In a press conference after the meeting, he said that the problems in Haiti are the main cause of migration to the DR. He promised to work for the strengthening of the economy and institutions in Haiti.

He said he discussed the world food situation, migratory problems and the possibility of working closely to improve relations with President Fernandez.

Martelly told the press he had come to discuss his candidacy with President Fernandez as well as to explore the potential working with the Dominican government to improve relations if elected in the 20 March poll.

In an interview in Diario Libre, Martelly said that if elected his immediate plans include restoring confidence between the state and the people, the state and friendly countries and justice, eradicate corruption and recover the authority of the state. He said his plans are to invest in preparing Haitians for development. He said that farmers made up 60% of the population. He was accompanied by Dominican ambassador in Haiti Ruben Silie and the senator for the province of San Jose de Ocoa, Carlos Castillo, a former Dominican consul in Haiti. He was also accompanied by Antonio Sola, Thierry Paul Mayard, Daniel Supplice, Philippe Mallebranche and Carine Beauvoir, according to the Presidency.
