The Dominican Republic and the Inter-American Development Bank signed an agreement yesterday that will provide US$300,000 to finance the studies for a program that seeks to offer new tourist products in Santo Domingo and the Colonial Zone, which has been declared as a World Heritage Site according to UNESCO. El Caribe newspaper reports that Economy, Planning and Development Minister Temistocles Montas and Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia said that the objective of the program is to help with the preparation of a US$30,000,000 loan that will allow for the execution of the program and thereby take some pressure off coastal tourism. The Ministry of Tourism will provide US$48,000 as counterpart funding for this first step. The basic idea is to "diversify the offer and obtain criteria for sustainability".
