In stark contrast to the educational utopia described by President Fernandez in his speech on Sunday, there will be no classes today, Tuesday, in the province of Santiago due to the tragic situation of the Teachers' Health Insurance (SEMMA). The Santiago chapter of the Dominican Teachers Association (ADP) took this decision due to the lack of health services for teachers in private clinics. They described the SEMMA as a "swindle", because despite making deductions from the teachers' monthly paychecks, when the teachers go to a health care provider, they are told that they cannot provide any services because the system owes them millions. The Santiago chapter of the ADP reminded reporters that teachers in the province of Espaillat (Moca) have only been teaching on Tuesdays and Thursdays in protest at the lack of coverage by SEMMA and the problems with the School Breakfast Program, as reported in El Nuevo Diario.
