The Navy chief of staff reported that the Fast Boat Vega, (LR-152) was lost at sea with the loss of one crewmember who had been working to save the ship. Navy spokesman Colonel Manuel Santiago Diaz Del Orbe said that the launch capsized on the night of 27 February while it was returning to the Las Calderas Naval Base in heavy seas after taking part in the military display celebrating Dominican Independence Day in Santo Domingo. The boat sent out a distress call, which was answered by the Aldebaran (GC-104) and the Coast Guard cutter Altair (GC-112). During the rescue mission, Able Seaman Jeremias Feliz Perez was transferred to the disabled craft to secure a line for towing after the tow cable became detached in the rough seas. Unfortunately, at that moment the rough seas and high winds capsized the craft and it sank. Despite all efforts, including a C-130 from the US Coast Guard, the sailor has not been found.
