The president of the CNTU transport union Ramon Perez Figuereo has called for sweeping increases in salaries after President Leonel Fernandez issued a call for the National Commission on Salaries to meet. Perez Figuereo said that since less than 20% of workers earn the minimum wage, 80% of the workers would not receive any benefit if only the minimum wage was adjusted. He said that all salaries up to RD$25,000 should be increased by 40%, since the basic family basket of goods and services is said to cost RD$30,000. According to El Nuevo Diario, the President's speech did not live up to public expectations, since he did not even mention sending the Hydrocarbon Law to the Congress for revision. He complained that a gallon of diesel was nearly RD$200 and a gallon of propane was almost RD$100.
