Three Dominicans are in the running for a spot on the starting rotation for the New York Yankees this spring. Bartolo Colon, Ivan Nova and Dellin Betances, one seasoned veteran and two youngsters, are vying to fill the spots vacated by the retirement of Andy Pettitte, the failure to capture Cliff Lee and a disappointing performance by A.J. Burnett in the Yankees' pitching staff. Colon had an acceptable start, and showed that his arm was pretty much back in shape, hitting 94 mph on the radar gun. Both Nova and Betances looked good against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, with Nova retiring six batters in order on just 21 pitches and also hitting 94 on the radar. This would be a major step forward for the Yankees, since their farm system is not known for producing many stars. Betances, who was born in Brooklyn to Dominican parents, has just turned 23, according to Diario Libre, was an eighth round draft pick in the university draft.
