The Police have announced the launch of a 400-camera city monitoring system. The first 100 cameras have been installed at key city streets in the Greater Santo Domingo area. Police Chief Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez said that the new system is aimed at preventing crime and helping to provide immediate assistance to the victims, as well as serving justice in the prosecution of criminals.
He said the new system operates with radio patrols so that the police can promptly arrive at the scene of a crime. He said that everything that is caught by the cameras would be recorded in a control center. Agents will have a protocol to follow when dealing with criminal cases. The cameras have been installed on leading avenues, barrios, bridges and other areas where crimes are frequent. The cost of the first phase is RD$50 million, as reported in El Caribe.
