The Dominican Republic National Commission for the Information Society and Knowledge (CNSIC) will review and update the National Strategy for the Information Society (E-Dominicana) during the first half of this year. E-Dominicana defines two basic areas of intervention: access to information and knowledge, and the State and digital services. The announcement was made by Joelle Exarhakos, executive director of the Dominican Republic Telecommunications Institute (Indotel), at the 'Workshop on Infrastructure and Connectivity of ICT for Local and Regional Development'. Exarhakos warned that it was high time to "start finding ways" to make broadband internet services available to all people across the Dominican Republic.
According to the Indotel representative, "it is urgent to bring fiber optic infrastructure to those [remote] places". Exarhakos also called for support and cooperation between the public and private sectors to achieve this goal. Teledensity in the Republic currently reaches 100 percent of the population. However, fixed telephony penetration in Santo Domingo reaches 18 percent, in Santiago 12 percent, while in the remaining provinces fixed telephony penetration currently stand at less than 8 percent. Broadband penetration tops 4 percent only in five of the country's provinces. The Dominican Republic targets an internet perpetration of over 50 percent of the population by 2020, and over 70 percent by 2030.
