Investigative journalist Alicia Ortega, who has gained recognition for her TV reports exposing corruption in government, has been named Woman of the Year 2010 in the Diario Libre Awards. Neurosurgeon Jose Joaquin Puello was named Man of the Year.

Dr. Puello Herrera is behind the Centro Cardio Neuroftalmologico y Trasplante (CECANOT), considered one of the most hi-tech medical centers in the Caribbean.

It was created mainly to serve patients who do not have the resources to pay for expensive surgical procedures. Last year the center treated 37,000 patients, and carried out 562 brain operations. www.cecanot.com.do (http://www.cecanot.com.do)

The awards ceremony will take place today and special mentions will be made for Freddy Beras Goico and Marcos Diaz, two former winners of the prize, as reported in Diario Libre.

Beras Goico, who passed away recently, was named "Man of the Year" in 2008 for his charitable work. Diaz was the first "Man of the Year" in 2006 and in 2010 he swam between five continents promoting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Hotel Embajador at 8pm on the occasion of the free newspaper's 10th anniversary.
