World famous architect Shohei Shigematsu is in Santo Domingo for lectures and to lead a group of Columbia University architecture students who will be looking into the Sans Souci and Costa Blanca residential and touristic developments in the Province of Santo Domingo and making recommendations.

Speaking at a lecture sponsored by the UNPHU School of Architecture, Shigematsu said that his interest in the country was motivated by the bicultural nature of the island of Hispaniola. He said that he is intrigued by the existence of two countries on the same island, one that has maintained the highest growth rates in the Caribbean alongside the one with the worst. "I was attracted by the duality of the island," he told the audience.

Shohei Shigematsu was project leader of winning design competitions such as the CCTV Headquarters in Beijing, the Koning Julianaplein mixed-use building in The Hague and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange Building.

He told crowd of future architects that the profession was the hardest hit by the recession, but he made the point that there could be an inverse relationship between the growth dynamics of the stock exchange and that of human indexes. He said the recession has spurred a boom in people planning and thinking, feeling and connecting. Social media and the construction of mega churches are evidence of this, combined with a profusion of books on architecture. "Architects don't have enough work, so they stay thinking a lot and hence produce many good books," said the famous architect.

During his presentation at the UNPHU he showed examples of several of his works that have been built and of projects, explaining the thinking behind each that sought to adapt each to its surroundings.
