During the handover ceremony to his replacement Josefina Pimentel, former Education Minister Melanio Paredes warned the new Minister of Education to watch out for the business interests that affect the sector. He spoke of the businesses in education, "the other, that which has the conflicts and the interests." Paredes did not name the companies. Paredes was criticized in the press for spending in remodeling of his offices including a millionaire elevator and investigative journalist Nuria Piera would present the millionaire second home he would build.
One of the conflicts of interests that affected his administration was the textbook conflict. Every year the government purchases millions in textbooks. This school year, new textbooks imported from Mexico were launched, instead of textbooks that are made locally and purchased from major publishing and printing companies every year. The textbook business moves millions, contrary to in the past when schoolbooks were passed down from brothers and sisters.
Paredes had signed a deal with a Mexican educational company for the incorporation of a new integrated textbook with new texts that has been criticized by local educational experts. This book would also have to be printed every year.
School breakfast procurement and the repeated intoxications has also been the focus of a great deal of conflict of interests and this is another issue the new minister Josefina Pimentel needs to tackle.
She was sworn into the post by Minister of the Presidency Cesar Pina Toribio.
Paredes also used the occasion to send a message to President Fernandez that he is someone who sees the light rather than the blotches and is profoundly grateful for the support President Fernandez has given him over the years. Paredes served as Minister of Education for two years.
Pina Toribio also swore in the new Minister of Interior and Police Jose Ramon (Monchi) Fadul and the new director of the Civil Aviation Institute Alejandro Herrera Rodriguez. He has yet to announce the new Minister of Industry and Commerce.
