President Leonel Fernandez has appointed Roberto Obando Prestol as the new director of the Department of Prisons. Obando Prestol was previously in charge of the National Institute of Public Administration (INAP). The appointment was announced in Decree 109-11 dated 2 March. The new Prisons director replaces retired Major General Manuel de Jesus Perez Sanchez, who had been criticized for granting concessions and privileges to certain prisoners. Perez Sanchez was appointed Presidential advisor on prison matters.
