Presidential candidate, popular singer Michel Martelly says that "the biggest problem to be solved in Haiti is the economy. Martelly has the support of international hip hop, star Wyclef Jean, is the favorite to win the Haiti Presidential election on 20 March against former First Lady Mirlande Manigat.

In a statement issued on 3 March, he states that "The Dominican Republic will play an important role in the reconstruction process of Haiti through its investments that will be beneficial for the Dominican and Haitian businesses."

Martelly recently visited the DR and held a meeting with President Fernandez.

During a debate organized by El Dia newspaper, Haitian Minister of Haitians Living Abroad Edwin Paraison, speaking for Haiti, economist Bernardo Vega and sociologist Wilfred Lozano for the Dominican Republic concurred that Haiti should be seen as an opportunity for the Dominican Republic, rather than as "a time bomb" due to increasing migration of the destitute.

Bernardo Vega, a historian as well as an economist, and advisor to the Interim Commission for the Reconstruction of Haiti (IHRC), says that none of the anti-Haitian arguments from some nationalist sectors are well founded, except for the use of Haitian labor to the detriment of Dominican workers, as reported in Haiti Libre. Academic Wilfred Lozano, who also sits on the IHRC has focused on the lack of a migration policy and the need to regularize the Haitian presence in the Dominican Republic, estimated at nearly one million by the director of the Department of Migration in the DR, Admiral Sigfrido Pared Perez.
