Former President Hipolito Mejia and PRD presidential candidate Miguel Vargas (a former minister of public works under Mejia) signed a pact on the eve of the PRD primary.
The agreement states that the priority is to maintain unity in the party.
The pact establishes that both will respect the results of the primary to choose the PRD presidential candidate for 2012 set for this Sunday, 6 March. A modification of the Constitution, the result of the so-called pact of the blue-shirts between Miguel Vargas Maldonado and President Leonel Fernandez, enabled former President Mejia to run for President again. Now, ironically, polls show that Mejia is leading against Vargas Maldonado among PRD members.
