Asisa Research has announced the results of a 25-28 February poll that surveyed 900 likely voters. The poll showed that former President Hipolito Mejia is the most likely winner of the PRD primary. He leads with 64%, followed by Vargas Maldonado with 36%. The poll found that Mejia has increased his positioning by seven points since January, while Vargas lost eight points.
The same poll shows that Leonel Fernandez leads with 75%, compared to 13% for Danilo Medina. The 2010 Constitution bans presidential re-election. The Asisa poll establishes that if President Leonel Fernandez does not seek the candidacy, Medina has 46% of the support, First Lady Margarita Cedeno 28%, Vice President Rafael Alburquqerque 7%, Jose Tomas Perez 6%, Francisco Dominguez Brito and Franklin Almeyda 5%.
Asisa Research observes that if former President Mejia wins his party's primaries this Sunday, and Danilo Medina wins the PLD's primaries, then the likely scenario for the 2012 Presidential elections in the Dominican Republic will be exactly the way it was back in the year 2000, when Mejia (PRD) beat Medina (PLD) with 49.8% of the vote, according to Asisa Research.
In the PRSC, La Altagracia senator Amable Aristy has 80% compared to 12% for Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso.
