Enmanuel Esquea Guerrero, Milagros Ortiz Bosch and Hugo Tolentino Dipp of the PRD primary national electoral organizing commission have proclaimed former President Hipolito Mejia as winner of the PRD presidential nomination in the 2012 presidential election. Mejia said that he humbly accepted the responsibility of leading the party to victory in 2012 and bringing about the unification of the PRD family and Dominican society. He announced that his doors were open for the internal unity of the PRD, without arrogance and recognizing the important role that each member of the PRD rank and file played in the campaign and in the performance of the government.
There was a massive voter turnout in the primary.
19 hours after the close of the vote, Esquea Guerrero, spokesman for the national electoral organizing commission, said that a fourth bulletin showed that of 927,072 valid votes (82.4% of the valid votes counted), Hipolito Mejia obtained 494,100 for 53.3% and Miguel Vargas 432,972 for 46.7%. Gallup and Asisa polls had shown that Mejia would defeat Vargas by wider margins.
The former President told reporters from Diario Libre that he had promised the country that he was not going to issue any statements before the National Organizing Commission had released their bulletins. He did this to show respect for the regulations and the party statutes and to the serious and continuous work they had carried out.
"It is now time for Dr. Esquea Guerrero, in the name of the Organizing Commission, to confirm that we have won the nomination and that therefore I am the party's presidential candidate", he declared in his first statement to the press after the results of the open primary were announced.
