PRD presidential Miguel Vargas Maldonado rejected the results of the party's National Nominating Convention yesterday. He claimed that more than 200,000 PLD members had voted against him. Although he had already been notified of the results, Vargas revealed during a press conference that he had requested that before issuing the first bulletin, "that they (the organizers) carry out an exhaustive revision of the voting rolls at the 3,520 polling stations that operated all over the country... in order to determine with pinpoint accuracy how many PLD members of the more than 400,000 that we had warned in time were on the semi-open voting rolls of the PRD, voted and how many of them had cast 'observed' votes".

Speaking to reporters from Diario Libre, Vargas reiterated his belief that the Convention broke its own regulations and resolutions from the Jose Francisco Pena Gomez Congress and of the National Executive Committee that established that the election of the presidential candidate should be done by the PRD rank and file and by citizens not registered as members of the PLD or other political parties.

Esquea disputes the grounds evoked by Vargas to reject the result. He said that both Vargas and Mejia agreed that those "suspected" of being PLD members would be only allowed to cast 'observed' votes. He said that of 800,000 votes, only 3,000 were classified as observed votes. He commented, as reported in El Caribe, that Vargas Maldonado himself had imposed the semi-open voting list. He said that it is not true that the PRD did not have its own list of members. The semi-open voting list enabled anyone entitled to vote to do so in the PRD primary. But Mejia and Vargas had agreed that known PLD members could be classified as 'observed voters' at the request of the delegates of both Mejia and Vargas.

Esquea dismissed speculation that the party would split between Vargas and Mejia supporters. "And now we have the impasse that he n Miguel n wants to be a victim on the base of creating a problem in the PRD that does not exist. In 15 days Vargas may be on his own, because it is not true that the PRD supporters are going to follow him in his intent to divide the PRD because he does not have leadership to divide anything," said Esquea, visibly bothered by Vargas Maldonado's stance, as reported in El Caribe.
