The talk of the town is the opinion of researchers from Columbia University who believe that Santiago de los Caballeros is at risk of experiencing an earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale, which would cause major damage. Santiago experienced a 6.4 earthquake in 2003. The researchers will be meeting with President Fernandez next month. Richard Plunz, the director of the Urban Design Lab at Columbia, told reporters that, "the next event of this type will probably occur on this (the east) side of the island of Hispaniola".

According to El Nuevo Diario, after last year's earthquake in Haiti, President Fernandez requested an analysis of the seismological situation of the Dominican Republic and recommendations on how to prepare the country for such an event will be presented during the meeting.
