Distinguished Dominican painter Candido Bido passed away yesterday afternoon. He died from cardio-respiratory arrest caused by heart failure. Bido was known for his striking art and setting a style. But he was best known for his efforts to develop new artists and culture in his hometown of Bonao and for the Dominican Republic.

The artist had been admitted to the Center for Diagnostics, Advanced Medicine and Tele-Medicine (Cedimat) in the Health Plaza on Sunday afternoon. According to Listin Diario, Bido suffered from diabetes and high blood pressure. His son, Jose Luis Bido said that doctors had performed a catheterization yesterday morning. He was 74.

His casket will be on view this morning at the Blandino Funeral Home on Abraham Lincoln Avenue in Santo Domingo, before being taken to Bonao, in Monsignor Nouel province for burial.

Bido is one of the most internationally famous Dominican painters. His work has been exhibited in several cities in the US including New York and Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Colombia, Spain, France, Israel, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, Haiti, Italy, Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Martinique, South Korea, Yugoslavia, Japan and Belgium.

A professor at the National Bellas Artes School, he also founded the Candido Bido Art Center, which holds classes in drawing, painting and sculpture. In 1982 he inaugurated the Candido Bido Art Gallery and donated the School of Painting to the city of Bonao. Between 1976 and 1987 he founded the Bonao Central Cultural Plaza and the Candido Bido Museum. He received numerous prizes including First Place in the Esso Young Artists Competition in 1965, fourth and Fifth place awards in the E. Leon Jimenes Biennial Competition in 1966, Third Place award in the XII National Biennial in 1974, Second Place in the XIV National Biennial of 1979, and First Prize of the E. Leon Jimenes Biennial of 1981.
