President Leonel Fernandez awarded medals of honor to ten Dominican women for their contributions to society yesterday. The President, the First Lady, the Presidential Minister and the Minister of Women were celebrating International Women's Day in a ceremony at the Presidential Palace.
Minister of Women Alejandrina German addressed the attendees and pointed out that women occupy 9% of the Senate seats, 21 % of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies, 8% of the mayors' posts and 33% of the city councils.
El Nuevo Diario reports that Manuela Suncar Gaspar was awarded a medal for her work in Science and Technology. Genoveva Ramirez Mesa for her union work, Nereyda Rodriguez in art, Liliam Russo Fernandez for her community work and Altagracia Paulino was recognized for work in journalism and jurisprudence. Evalina Acosta de Castro was given a medal for her efforts in the educational field, Deputy Minou Tavarez Mirabal was given a medal by President Fernandez for her political work, and Andrea Cordero was honored, posthumously, for her community work along with Ana Rafaela Marinez Alvarez, also posthumously.
