The Dominican Republic has 9,378,818 inhabitants, of whom 4,670,898 are women and 4,707,921 are men, according to the preliminary results of the IX National Census of Population and Housing 2010. Minister of Economy, Planning and Development Temistocles Montas and ONE president Pablo Tactuk announced the preliminary findings yesterday during a press conference of the 2010 Census were in the Green Room of the Presidential Palace.

In comparison to the last census taken in the country in 2002, which showed a population of 8,652,541, the latest census shows an eight-year increase of 726,277 inhabitants. Also during this period, the number of women increased by 405,683 and the number of men by 410,599, and now there are more men than women in the local population.

The Census, which was taken between 1 and 7 December 2010, reveals also that there are 3,097,857 housing units, an increase of 652,542 over the 2002-2010 period, up from 2,445,315 units in the earlier census.

The province of Santo Domingo still has the highest number of inhabitants, according to the provisional census data, with 2,359,327 people registered. This is followed by Santiago with 942,509, of whom 471,256 are male and 471,253 are female, a difference of just three individuals. Likewise in the National District, 935,058 people were counted, 449,828 males and 485,230 females. In San Cristobal, there were 557,269 inhabitants divided into 276,794 males and 280,376 females. In La Vega 379,372 people were counted, 194,997 male and 184,375 female. And in Puerto Plata 328,196 people were counted in the census and 164,827 were males and 163,368 were female.
