In his column today, executive editor of Diario Libre Adriano Miguel Tejada focuses on the preliminary results of the 2010 Census. He says the figures show the population is 9,378,818 inhabitants, 700,000 fewer than the previously estimated 10 million. The census counted foreigners as well as Dominicans.

There are also more men then women, and the composition of the Dominican family has changed. He said in the past, the average Dominican family was made up of five members n a father, mother and three children. But the 2010 Census found that the average Dominican home is now made up of three members with a single head of household, either a man or a woman. This is attributed to the decline in the birth rate, and a growing number of women-headed households. "The preliminary information indicates we are before a society that is changing at a fast pace and whose reality has not been duly studied by the planners and authorities. There is lots of material for study."
