The Chamber of Deputies has approved the contract for the construction of the Monte Grande Dam by the Brazilian company Andrade Gutierres. The government will have to take on Brazilian debt to finance the construction of the US$354.2 million dam that will provide water for drinking and irrigation in the southwest using waters from the Yaque del Sur river. The funds will also go towards the rehabilitation of the older Sabana Yegua dam. The project was signed by the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources and Andrade Gutierres.
The dam construction began on 28 July 2010 with a groundbreaking ceremony by President Leonel Fernandez.
