Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia is advising the ruling PLD party to choose the presidential candidate now. He told journalist Viviano de Leon who was attending the ITB travel exhibition in Berlin that it was not in the PLD's interest that PRD presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia be left to tour the country on his own. Garcia said that the PRD would be the PLD's rival in the election. Garcia has worked as President Leonel Fernandez's campaign manager.
"In the PLD there are fellow party members of many sorts, true personalities of Dominican politics, people of great prestige who have been working to secure the presidential nomination, many of whom have spent more than 10 months working, he stressed. He says that this all shows that they have time to position themselves in the party.
He agreed with President Fernandez's stance in calling for a meeting to be held with the presidential hopefuls next week in order to set a date for the primary. He recommended convening the Central Committee meeting on 20 March to select the pre-candidates.
"In the interest of the PLD and to win the election again it is of vital importance to choose our party's Presidential candidate in the shortest time possible, because Hipolito Mejia is a man who was already a presidential candidate in 2000 and won the election and even though he did not receive more than 50% of the vote at that time one has to acknowledge that he is a political figure who has many resources to mobilize himself in the national territory.
