New routes for passenger transport have worsened the traffic jams in Santiago, the country's second largest city. As reported in Diario Libre, the traffic jams increase costs for the transporters who have to take longer and spend more gas to service their passengers. The traffic chaos in downtown Santiago has also increased levels of urban environmental pollution. The worst blackspots are at the Las Carreras, Juan Pablo Duarte, Estrella Sadhala, 27 de Febrero, Hermanas Mirabal and Circunvalacion Sur avenues. But traffic is also chaotic on the Del Sol, Sabana Larga, Cuba, Restauracion, Espana, Duarte, 30 de marzo, 16 de agosto and General Cabrera streets.

Transporters complain that the municipal government has increased routes, bringing more vehicles inside the city and there is no order in the transit sector in Santiago.

"Apparently, the approval of the new routes is a big business for the city councilors and municipal officials," said Gervasio de la Rosa of Fetranreno, a large transport union.

Diario Libre reports that the mayor of Santiago, Gilberto Serulle announced the suspension of the approval of new routes until new technical traffic studies are done.

Diario Libre reports that the Santiago Metropolitan Transport Authority's Planning Department has suggested some changes that would improve traffic in Santiago, including changing the direction of some avenues and streets.
