The National Union of Pharmacies says that the government has not acted against more than 1,500 illegal pharmacies that operate in the country. Raul Hernandez Castanos, president of the association, said that the Ministry of Public Health says that it lacks the mechanisms to close them. He says the illegal competition affects the profitability of the pharmacies that fulfill government regulations. He says the illegal stores operate as warehouses of low cost pharmaceuticals. He says they can sell pharmaceuticals for 30% less than the registered pharmacies.
He said there are constant violations of the General Health Law 42-01 that establishes that pharmacies need to be located at least 500 meters away from each other. He said many legitimate pharmacies have had to close due to the lack of controls, unfair competition, irregular sales of pharmaceuticals and high operational costs.
As reported in El Dia, Hernandez said he believes that drug trafficking has infiltrated the pharmaceuticals business.
