The executive vice-president of the Dominican Electricity Industry Association (ASIE), Milton Morrison, says that the electricity rates in the Dominican Republic are not the "highest in the world", and he added that they are not even the highest in the region. He said that one reason for the high local prices of energy was that electricity generation in the DR was 47% petroleum based, and in contrast energy in Central America was 61% based on renewable energy sources.

Morrison is also the vice president of the Atabey Innovation Center, which has just released a study called "The Demystifying of the Electricity Myth". The study takes a close look at the energy sector in the Dominican Republic. In several of the islands in the Caribbean region electricity is more expensive than the DR, the exception being Trinidad and Tobago where energy costs US$0.05 kw/h due to the existence of natural gas reserves.
