The latest fuel price increases ordered by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce are making things worse for small and medium-scale industries, according to Francisco Capellan, the president of the Dominican Confederation of Small and Medium Industries (Codopyme).

The new fuel prices - Premium gasoline RD$200.10, regular RD$189.80 and diesel RD$174.30 - have caused transport sector leaders to continue their protests. Listin Diario reports that the CNTU union met on Saturday to discuss increasing their fares across the board. On Monday, today, they are planning to launch a series of protests outside government buildings.

Economist Henri Hebrard said that the increase in fuel prices could unleash an inflationary spiral that would put the fulfillment of the International Monetary Fund's goal of a 5% or 6% inflation rate in danger. Capellan stressed that the increased fuel prices reduced the ability of local industries to compete in the marketplace.
