Bruce Kraft who heads the fraud unit at the United States embassy in Santo Domingo has warned that many Dominicans are cheated with promises of getting a lottery visa. He said that the Dominican Republic is not included in the lottery visa program. Interviewed on a local television station (CDN), Kraft said a lot of Dominicans receive e-mail messages asking for money. This is the first evidence of fraud, he said, since the government "never asks for money to be sent by Western Union". In addition, the Dominican Republic does not qualify for the visa lottery because this is a program for countries that have much fewer immigrants in the US. According to Hoy newspaper, many Dominicans have family members in the United States who can ask for their relatives. The official also warned against the use of counterfeit documents such as wedding certificates or birth certificates containing false information, since these are criminal offenses that can lead to them being arrested here in the Dominican Republic.
