After tying the hands of a Police corporal and taking his sidearm, eleven inmates, including seven who were in jail on drug charges, escaped from the holding cell at the Palace of Justice in San Francisco de Macoris.
The Police are investigating the incident. According to the reports, the agent alleges that when he opened a door, an inmate known as El Quemaito grabbed him from behind while Sandoval Garcia disarmed him and the detainees escaped.
Later reports from the National Police indicate that last night one of the fugitives was killed in a gunfight with police and another was wounded. A further five of the escapees gave themselves in to the authorities.
According to the report on the incident, Andres Arias de la Rosa (Calicito), 26, died of gunshot wounds from police agents he attacked with the Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun, serial number L637491, which had been taken from Corporal Estarlin Santana.
The shootout occurred on a farm in Guasima and Matalarga around 2pm yesterday.
The wounded man was named as Juan Manuel Betances Matos (El Quemaito), 24. The five people who were taken into custody are Jonathan Hernandez Gomez, Juan Carlos Garcia Gonzalez, Luis Alberto Lopez and Joselito Burgos de la Cruz.
Still at large are Jose Antonio Hernandez, Rafaelito Alberto Rojas and Junior Marcelino Arias. These men are accused of violations of Law 50-88 on Drugs and Controlled Substances. Also at large are Jefry Sandoval Garcia, implicated in a homicide and Richard Reyes Gutierrez (Tutin) who had been arrested on suspicion of raping an underage girl.
