Coordinated by its president Fernando Gonzalez Nicolas, the Roundtable of the Commonwealth of Nations in the DR met on Monday to celebrate Commonwealth Day and review major events and activities in 2010. The Roundtable united the embassies of the United Kingdom, Canada, Trinidad Tobago, India, South Africa and representatives of several leading companies doing business in the DR. The Commonwealth primarily links businesspeople from these countries with strong support from their diplomatic representations.
Major accomplishments in 2010 included a visit by the Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shashi Tharoor. Trade between the DR and India has increased over 300% since 2005, and 14 companies of India are now doing business in the DR. President Leonel Fernandez recently made the first visit by a Dominican statesman to India, part of the strengthening of diplomatic and trade relations between both countries.
In 2010, the bi-national chambers of commerce of the Commonwealth signed an agreement to jointly promote bilateral relations. The presidents of the Chambers of Commerce of Great Britain in the Dominican Republic, Roberto Herrera, of Canada, Eduardo Dominguez Imbert, Trinidad and Tobago, Oscar Rosa, India, Nayar Jay and the president of the Society of Friends of the Dominican South Africa, Norman de Castro signed as witnesses an agreement with the diplomatic representatives.
Another important event was the agreement signed between the Dominican Association of Exporters (ADOEXPO) and the Round Table of the Countries of the Commonwealth in the DR to strengthen trade relations and maximize business opportunities. The pact was signed at the headquarters of ADOEXPO by Kai Schoenhals, President of the institution and the presidents of the British Chambers of Commerce of the Dominican Republic, Marcos Pena Rodriguez, and the Canadian Chamber, Eduardo Dominguez. Also signed, the president of the Chambers of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago in the Dominican Republic, Carlos Federico Reyes, for the Chamber of Commerce of India, Eulogio Santaella, and South Africa Friendship Association in the Dominican Republic, Norman De Castro. Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Steven Fisher attended as witnesses, and Fernando Gonzalez Nicolas, president of the Roundtable for Countries of the Commonwealth in the Dominican Republic.
The Agribusiness Council also signed an agreement with the Commonwealth organization to identify new opportunities for agriculture and agribusiness for Dominicans in the markets of the 54 countries of the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth countries' investment in the Dominican Republic totals US$5 billion, when the US$3 billion Barrick Gold has announced as an investment in their Cotui mine development is added.
