Noticias Sin recalls several other announcements that turned out to be just that, announcements. In 2004, the Fernandez government announced the reduction of the number of 'bottles' in government, or jobs with no real function granted for political patronage. At the time the government also banned superfluous purchases. The reality was that the pace of the 'bottles' in government increased and superfluous purchases have grown at such a pace that the country was awarded top ranking by the World Economic Forum for government wasteful spending.

In 2005, the government announced that public taxis would run on alternate days.

In 2006, President Fernandez spoke about a 25% reduction in government employee wages. In 2007 he ordered a ban on the use of government SUVs during weekends and holidays.

In 2008, he ordered a 20% reduction in government spending for the August-December period.

El Dia makes an interesting comparison of the austerity measures announced in 2007 when fuel was climbing to record highs and those announced at present.

The measures announced in 2007, most of which did not happen, were:

The installation of 750 synchronized traffic lights in Santo Domingo and Santiago and LED technology.
The introduction of chronometers and surveillance cameras to facilitate the flow of traffic.
The creation and development of road rules to improve critical intersections.
Restructuring of urban transport rules and construction of inter-urban terminals to prevent buses and mini-buses from entering city centers.
The creation of exclusive lanes for public transport.
Conversion to natural gas of 80 OMSA buses, 2,000 public taxi cars and 400 Police and Army vehicles.
A ban on the use of government vehicles on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Public taxis were ordered to operate on alternate days.
A general campaign for energy savings, promotion and development of renewable energy and bio-fuels.
Commercial exploitation of the first line of the metro.
