President Leonel Fernandez has appointed former free zone businessman Angel (Chichio) Rosario Vinas to head the Center for Development of Industrial Competitiveness (Proindustria). The entity is in charge of implementing programs and policies for stimulating local production.
Rosario Vinas said he was committed to promoting competitiveness development of the manufacturing sector, backing mechanisms that stimulate production. He said he is committed to competitiveness and will seek to develop new mechanisms such as support to innovation, logistics, stimuli for exports, strengthening of associations and value chains. He called for the diversification of the country's production apparatus, industrial linkages, promoting industrial parks, industrial districts and linkages with international markets, as reported in El Caribe.
His appointment comes shortly after the naming of another high profile retired businessman, Manuel Garcia Arevalo, recently appointed Minister of Industry & Commerce.
Rosario's appointment comes at a time when the Ministry of Hacienda has announced it has asked the free zone companies pay the RD$1.2 billion in financial support. Hacienda Minister Daniel Toribio has already held meetings with 32 companies that borrowed US$32 million with the guarantee of the government.
