A tourist taxi from Sosua to the airport wants $18 - $20. I took a public taxi from Sosua and it then dropped my girl back off in Sosua for 300 pesos. These guys have come down in prices. A Tourist taxi wants $45 to go out to Puerto Plata and hang at the clubs a few hours. A oublic taxi wanted only 600 ($21.00) -800 ($28.00) pesos.

Do not get pushed around by the tourist taxi thieves.

I walked over to the taxi stand on Sunday to rerturn to the airport. I was going to use the public taxis, but the guys at the taxi stand agreed to 300 pesos, so it paid to do a little walking. If they pick you up at the hotel, it is tougher to negoiciate.

What are the rates from the airport to Sosua right now?

still 20 US, You might want to try walking out to the main road to catch the public taxi. If enough guys do that, then they will drop the price.

Palace John sent me a guy that cost 15 us, he waited for my late flight too.

Wait for $15 or stay home for nothing, $15 is worth the wait.

Yeah, the guy did not look unhappy about the 15 I gave him.

Gas is $3.30 a gallon these days so your friend will use aboyt $12 in gas.
A taxi charging as low as $40 still makes good money.

The Publis taxi was 10 pesos to Sosua at the mian highway. I can't see it being more than 50 to Costamber, but it is a long walk from the main highway. Negociate and you could get 200-300 pesos.

Actually more then that Jimmy...

Gas is RD$101.9 aka 102 for regular in Santiago.
Rate at 29-1 = US$3.52 per gallon!

Now to top it off if they have a SUV, hopefully they do one can expect 15-20 mpg. I know I normally drive a Honda CRV which should get 23/29. I am damn lucky to get 17 mpg in the DR. Climbing the mountains, stop and go traffic, no true highway speeds (60+ mph), etc.

Going the highway route Santiago to Sosua is 88km or 55miles. That's 110 r/t at 18 mpg is 6.1 gallons X US$3.52 that's US$21.51 in gas alone!!!

I am sure even the Honda and Toyota cars get at best 22mpg down there!

Ok the Puerto Plata airport is about 1/4 mile from the main road. There is a gate and the parking lot is smallish. You can walk the 800 feet or so from the customs area to the parking lot gate. There are motos there sometimes. If you want a public taxi or guaguayou will need to walk the remaining 1/4 mile to the main road.

1. Since it is a friend he has to take into account R/T, not one way.

2. The taxis at STI are Santiago taxis not Puerto Plata taxis sitting around waiting for the tourist who flew into STI so they do have to return to Santiago later in the day to see their family.

3. The Dominican that can afford a private taxi from Santiago to PP will also most likely have their own car so they can drive. Most Dominicans will take a guagua. (Note 60 pesos for the same ride!)

As for Diesels I doubt his friend is picking him up in a Diahtsu Delta truck. Mitsubishi makes one deisel version of the Montero, Toyota (1 ver. Land Cruiser), Honda NONE, the other most likely cars that are deisel are probably MBs & VWs. I am quite sure most everything capable of hauling more then 2 tons is deisel but again those trucks aren't hanging out at STI looking for passengers. Finally I am quite sure those corollas, camry, civics, etc with the taxi signs on the roof are not deisel.

The only problem with a publico is that it probably won't go down the road to Confresi.

As for highway robbery, when I was down there a couple weeks ago BBs was charging RD$135 for a Presidente pequena!

cause it's the best fuckin party in the world. 10 to 20 of us running all over Black Beards. Chicas in the pool topless, naked Jacuzzi parties 24/7

Everybody bring 2 - 1.75 liters of somethin. The bar will be set up pool side and we will need to make a run to the store everyday for coke, OJ, ice, etc . . . saves a fortune.

2 - 1.75 liters will last me close to 4 days and x-ray won't drink his share so that will get me thru the 5th day . . . theoretically

Food ain't THAT expensive there, like 250 to 300 for a complete diner. That's like 9 bucks.

Nothing like digging up an old thread...

I arrive in STI from EWR on 10/7 for my first trip, and have a car booked at the airport. After hashing this out with a few of the brethren in another thread, I believe they have convinced me to cancel my rental. I need to get to my condo in Costambar (four blocks away from BB), and will be traveling with one (1) 24" carry-on bag.

If I read the board correctly, I have 2 options to get to Puerto Plata/Costambar: 1) the Caribe bus or 2) private taxi. Are there quaguas running near STI airport that make the run to Puerto Plata for a possible 3rd option?

I have a few other related questions...please help me out...I will be much obliged:

1. If I decide to take the Caribe bus from downtown Santiago to POP, what's a fair price to pay for a private cab from the aeropuerto to the bus station?

2. Are there publicos running between the STI airport and the Caribe bus station?

3. Is the 24" carry-on bag, too big for travel in a crowded guagua...or will it get tossed up on a roof rack and be hopelessly "lost" en-route.

4. Same question as #3, but applicable to a Caribe bus.

5. Once in POP, what are reasonable private/publico taxi fares between Pto Plata (e.g. Caribe Bus station & Central Park) and the gate at Costambar?

6. From the maps, Old City appears to be about 2-3 km from Costambar...an easy walk down Hwy #5. I also noticed another route ... an unimproved road or trail that wends it way around the harbor from the beach at Costambar to just outside Old City. If this is the case, I will be taking frequent walks (during the daytime, of course) between my condo and Pto Plata. Your feedback/sanity check is requested on this one.

Muchas gracias, amigos! :newbie:

and a 24 inch bag should be no problemany where...it'll go in the trunk of a car or with you in a minivan

lets see first time in country. if you dont speak spanish get the waiting taxi. if you speak decent spanish and feel like using public transportation try the metro line form STI to POP. Its 70 pesos and only takes like an hr. Nice air conditioned buses and you can bring your bag on if you put it on your lap.

From POP guaguas and publicos are cheap and easy to come by for the rest of the trip. this will be the most expensive portion of the ride (STI to metro line shouldnt be more than 300 pesos). I dont quite know the average cost from POP to your final destination.

Actually the Caribe tour bus will Pass Costamber on teh way to POP. The Bus takes the hiughway which runs around west of POP. You might want to ask if they will stop around there and then it is noyt very far to your condo. Not sure as I have never asked about that. The bus from santiago to POP is around 80 pesos. i took it January, but to Sosua.
